It made light work of all that heavy water. However, within the space of half of one second my world was now the wrong way up!
Putting that in more pictorial terms, my face was heading at speed towards the ground and the iron table feet were heading at an equal speed towards my startled face.
The good news is that my gums took just the lightest of glancing blows and I still have a full set of teeth, the bad news is that I now have a comprehensive collection of somewhat more minor injuries.
Now why do I mention all this? Well it does serve to illustrate the fact that in a lot of areas of our lives we tend to operate on assumptions and these can easily tumble to the ground just as quickly, certainly and ignominiously as I did.
A lot of the time we don’t even realise the extent to which are lives are precariously balanced on what can prove to be just flimsy assumptions. We assume that our job will be there next month, that our health will be fine, that our friends will not desert us, but sadly, as recent times have made clear to us, even our very lives can be no more certain than blades of grass.
The Lord Jesus was not one to trade in assumptions but rather to dispense more solid assurances. Here is one of His most precious: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”
Let us then lay hold of this assurance and loose hold of those less certain assumptions and then we will never be found to rather unbecomingly fall off our perches!
