You could be forgiven for thinking that it is only in more recent days that people have really learned how to party. Even a cursory reading of the Bible, however, reveals that God himself planned that feasting should be built into everyday life. In fact, three times every year, it was set down that people would gather together for a week at a time to drop what they were doing and have a thoroughly good spiritual and physical party. Now it was at the very climax of the end of year Feast of Tabernacles that Jesus shouted out these memorable words:
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” John 7 verse 37
Understand that for seven days the priests had done a round trip from the temple to the Pool of Siloam and back. They had gathered water only to pour it out in the temple courtyard and thus remind themselves of the time when God had physically sustained them during their forty years in that dry and dusty desert. On the final day they would go around the altar seven times saying Hosanna – “Lord save us” and so it was into this very setting that Jesus went on to say:
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” By this he meant the Spirit …” John 7 verses 38-39
When Jesus invites us to drink of him, he does not have in mind a mere sip, he wants us drink and drink and keep drinking of his wonderful living water of salvation. Have you believed and trusted him yet? Wait no longer, be ‘drunk’ in him, enjoy his indwelling Spirit and really live.
