One thing I admit I’ve been completely in the dark about is how much fun can be had gathering together for a game of indoor footie. Now, if you’re the sporting type, you are probably thinking to yourself: “You evidently need to get out more, large numbers of us already do this every single week!” According to a recent news article, a lot of changes have been taking place in sports halls and things have just gotten a lot more interesting with the use of ultraviolet light.

One regular participant said:

“I think it’s just the combination of these three factors: so it’s playing football with their friends, the lights are off, they got the face paints, the headbands on, the music’s on, it’s just a real party scene.”

Another commented:

“‘No one knows who I am so it doesn’t matter what mistakes I make; I can just play, be myself…”

Taking all this together I realized there are so very many parallels with the church today. For one thing people simply assume that church must not be for them. Then, when folk come together weekly they don’t meet merely with neighbours, they meet with best friends. In church it doesn’t matter what mistakes you make for no one’s counting and you simply come as yourself. For another thing, church is less of a performance and more of a party scene. And finally, just to round off the comparison, when you come into church the lights of the world are deliberately turned off and the light of God’s all searching word comes on to show things in their truest and most incredibly vibrant colours. I wonder when it comes to today’s church life whether you’re still in the dark? Why not experience another turf and join in the party? I can assure you you’ll realise it’s no own goal.
